Types
of Flute Woods
Among the traditional woods
used for Native American style flutes are western red cedar, eastern
aromatic cedar, spruce and redwood. Other woods are also used including
a variety of hardwoods. |
Flute
Keys
The size of the flute and the hole placement determine the key of
the flute. The most popular flute keys are A,
G,
F#.
Beginning players usually start with one of these. Other popular
keys are G#,
F,
E
and Low
C (# denotes sharp key). Extremely high and low pitched
flutes are challenging to play and therefore not recommended as
your first flute. These include High
C, D,
E
and Low
B and A. |
Choosing
a Flute Key
A beginner with small hands will be happiest with an A
or G#
flute. A beginner with average size hands or larger will be happy
with a G
or F#
flute. F
flutes have wider finger hole spacing and are more of a challenge,
as are E
flutes which have a bigger diameter. flutes have a low tone but
are advanced flutes because they have both a larger diameter and
greater finger hole spacing. Flute prices increase with their size
and tone.

Flute
Configurations
The most popular flutes are single tubes. Doubles and triples are
also made as well as single tube double chamber flutes which are known
as drones. |
Flute
Makers
There are only a handful of flute makers who craft perfectly tuned
flutes from the finest wood. A full-time top quality flute maker will
typically craft less than 200 flutes per year. A fine flute should
sell for many times the price to compensate the flute maker fairly,
but the prices are moderate given the work, skill and time required.

5
Hole vs. 6 Hole Flutes
Native American style flutes are almost always made with 5 or 6
holes. However, a six-hole flute can be converted into a five-hole
flute by covering the third hole from the top with a leather strand.
Care
of Your Flute
Avoid extremely hot temperatures (do not store your flute in the
car during the summer) and avoid long exposure to direct sunlight
or other harsh light. If you have more than one flute, it is ideal
to rotate them during a long playing session to avoid moisture buildup.
A flute bag or case is nice to have for storing or transporting
from place to place. |
Flute
Rack
Flute racks are your most important accessory. It is best to store
your flute(s) on a rack to keep them from rolling around and so
they can air out between playing session. Also a flute displayed
is played more and more and is a beautiful art piece.
