Music has always been a big part of Jerry's life. He started playing guitar and singing around the age of 14. In the last 30-some years Jerry has toured and played in bands all over the country. There are so many different facets to making a flute. Each wood has different properties and that has made it an interesting journey. What he really loves is when he gets that last finger hole finished and plays the flute fully for the first time and hears the voice of the flute. Each flute is totally unique. It's a magical moment.
Hard woods give a totally different sound than soft woods. The loudness stays the same. The tone is different. Out of the hardwoods, Jerry really likes Purple Heart. It's hard as a rock and difficult to work, but it gives such a wonderful bright clear sound. Out of the soft woods, Eastern Red Cedar is his favorite because it has such a warm tone.
